What Is the Edo Shogun Roads Project?
The Five Routes (Gokaido) starting from Nihonbashi, together with the secondary routes (wakiokan) developed as their branches, such as the Mito Kaido and the Narita Kaido (hereinafter, the Five Routes and the secondary routes together are called the “Edo Shogun Roads”), cover the entire Greater Kanto area (*), and even today, along these Edo Shogun Roads, attractive content such as food and culture, as well as historical tourism resources, is abundant. Therefore, by further branding the Greater Kanto area, currently promoted as “Tokyo & Around Tokyo,” under the unified theme of the “Edo Shogun Roads,” we will communicate effectively to Japan and overseas and encourage visitors, and through raising awareness of road-based tourism in each region and building momentum, we will work to restore vitality to the Greater Kanto area that was drained by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, while making use of the characteristics of each area as Greater Kanto, we will build mechanisms for DMOs and others to earn revenue in their regions.

With the full-scale start of overseas promotion for the “Edo Shogun Roads” project, we invited experience-based content on the theme of “Unknown Edo Culture Experiences,” covering resources that let foreign travelers experience culture that already existed in the Edo period, not limited to culture that originated in the Edo period (including that which began at the end of the shogunate). From the submitted content, members of the Edo Shogun Roads Project Advisory Meeting selected 15 items, which were announced at a ceremony and are published on the Edo Shogun Roads website of the Kanto District Transport Bureau and the Kanto Regional Tourism Organization.
